£25,000 - £27,000 per annum

Ordinary Things, an established YouTube channel with a focus on satirical news reporting, is looking for a full-time researcher and scriptwriter to join the production team. The role will include carrying out in-depth research on video topics, drafting scripts, and being involved in the pre-production process. The ideal applicant will have an aptitude for uncovering novel information and bullet-proof fact-checking. An interest in geopolitics, finance, and technology is highly welcomed.

The channel is seeking applicants with a background in journalism, factual television and radio, or advanced academic research.

This role does not involve any on-camera video production activities. It offers a flexible working environment that supports a diversity of applicants and backgrounds.

The Role

As a researcher and scriptwriter, your main responsibility will be gathering contextual and novel information on a catalogue of potential video topics and condensing your findings into an easily digestible format, i.e. compiling information databases with citations and creating visualisations of abstract and time-based data.

Your research methods will be varied. They will include, but will not necessarily be limited to, carrying out broad literature review, reading company financial reports, planning and conducting remote interviews, and reconstructing events via social media.

You will also be periodically involved in the script writing process in a two-person writer’s room environment. Lastly, your ability to fact-check will be involved in a rigorous quality control in the final stages of video production.

This is a remote working role, but you will be expected to attend in-person meetings in Brighton, 1-2 times a week.

The Candidate

The ideal candidate will be an experienced researcher and writer who is comfortable working independently. Processing large amounts of information should come easy to you. You have a curious mind and are familiar with the research tools necessary to uncover novel and noteworthy information in a wide variety of contexts.

An interest in current affairs (with a focus on geopolitics, finance, and technology) is desired. A good sense of humour and an understanding of the intricacies of internet culture will also go a long way.

You might be searching for jobs in traditional media or academia, not thinking a role like this even existed.

You’re someone who understands the challenges and benefits of working in a small creative team. Ideally, you’re excited by the flexibility, responsibility and room for growth that this setting provides.

You must be able to commute to Brighton 1-2 times a week.
