We are seeking to recruit a motivated Health Care Assistant who is passionate about Orthopaedics to work on our inpatient ward at Wrightington Hospital.

The role of the Health Care Assistant in ECU is to support the registered nurses in delivering critical care nursing to our patients

The role is for 37.5hrs per week on a permanent basis and will include working day and night shifts.

Function as a team member of the Multidisciplinary Team by assisting the Registered Nurse in the delivery of effective high quality patient care. All work undertaken by the post holder will be under direct supervision of the Registered Nurse.

On-Call

Please note that senior positions (AFC band 8A or above) may be expected to participate in an on-call rota, if the role is predominantly operational.
  • To maintain the highest possible standards of compassionate and professional patient care with particular attention to privacy and dignity.
  • Assist patients with personal care and hygiene.
  • Assist patients with their sanitary needs, ensuring privacy and dignity is maintained.
  • Ensure that patient’s bedding, nightwear and clothing is maintained in a clean and comfortable state.
  • Assist in the meeting of patients’ nutritional needs. Ensure that patients who require assistance at mealtimes have assistance with eating and drinking.
  • Where identified in the plan of care ensure that food and fluid intake and output are accurately documented on appropriate charts.
  • Assist in skin and pressure area care to prevent pressure ulcers developing. Under the supervision of registered nurses, ensure patients are helped to move position to prevent discomfort and / or pressure ulcers.
  • Assist patients with safe mobilisation according to their plan of care and where appropriate seek help from other members of the ward team.
  • Utilise appropriate moving and handling aids to reduce the risk of injury to the patient and themselves.
  • Assist in supporting therapeutic recreational activities for patients as appropriate.
  • Assist registered staff in the taking and recording of vital signs as per the patient’s plan of care.
  • Communicate to the nurse in charge any changes observed in a patient’s condition.
  • Escort patients from the ward to other departments within the hospital, in accordance with Standards of Practice and Care, maintaining their privacy and dignity at all times.
  • Be aware of and contribute to the protection of individuals from abuse and report any suspicions of abuse to nurse in charge.
  • Assist a registered nurse with performing the Last Offices.
  • Recognise and promote the patients’ rights, cultural beliefs and values.
  • Promote patients privacy and dignity both in the ward/department and across the Trust.
  • Attend annual updates on fire and cardiac arrest procedures (and any other required mandatory training). Take appropriate action on discovering or suspecting a fire or cardiac arrest.
  • Answer the telephone in accordance to the Trust’s Standards for Practice and Care and refer calls to the nurse in charge as appropriate.
  • Communicate with patients and relatives in a courteous, caring, sensitive and appropriate manner, and refer to the nurse in charge as required.
  • Report any incidents, accidents, concerns, near misses or complaints to the nurse in charge. Be sensitive to the patient and their environment, ensuring communication of a personal and or private nature is discreet and patient confidentiality is maintained.
  • Document care given in patient’s care-plan and ensure this is countersignature by a registered nurse.
