Street Lighting Technician

About the role

This is a trainee role where you will learn, gain experience, and develop through several ways including on the job training and having a street lighting mentor; academic training of weekly day release for a HNC course; residential courses resulting in the Institution for Lighting Professionals exterior lighting Diploma; as well as many other short courses and opportunities for Continual Professional Development.

Joining our Street Lighting team, you’ll be based at Budbrooke near Warwick but have a mix of home, site, and office working, though initially you would be spending most of your time working with your mentor. You would be expected to visit sites countywide efficiently using your own transport for which a mileage payment is paid. Your vehicle that you use for travelling between sites must include Business insurance.

The post is full time and permanent for 37 hours per week plus, after gaining sufficient experience, being the out of hours duty lighting engineer in a Client role on a rota of 1 week in 5, for which an additional allowance is paid. The out of hours duty lighting engineer takes calls from the Police and other organisations out of office hours and then deals with them accordingly which could, for example, be switching lights on from your WCC supplied device or maybe logging information about equipment that has been damaged and then contacting our contractor and sending them out to make equipment safe.

You will be responsible for issuing orders for the maintenance and replacement of street lighting and associated equipment, including private cable networks, as well as inspecting work and the updating of the inventory; dealing with queries from Councillors, other teams and organisations, liaising with street lighting contractors and electricity Companies as necessary, and recharging for any work that you carry out that can be recharged, for example lighting columns that are damaged in a Road Traffic Collision. There will also be opportunities to become multi-skilled and develop your street lighting knowledge and abilities in the design and inspections of street lighting systems for housing developments and new road layouts and improvements.

You will be working within a small team of street lighting professionals and teamwork is essential so giving and receiving support for each other is essential.

Key Requirements

To be successful in this role, you must have at least an electrical NVQ level 3 qualification or higher. It is important that you have strong communication skills, can creatively solve problems and plan your own workload, often working under pressure. You will also have the ability to work within a team as well as on your own initiative and over time to start to contribute towards improved practices. It is important you are flexible in your approach to work as priorities can change quickly. The role is based Budbrooke near Warwick and you will travel across the county as the Service requires.

Please note that many of the tasks in the Generic Role Profile demonstrate the level that you would be working in across a number of engineering activities and in street lighting you would, for example, not be expected to deal with bridge inspections and other non-street lighting activities that are mentioned.

About Us

Warwickshire County Council are responsible for over 55,000 street lights, illuminated signs and bollards, and associated Highway electrical equipment around the County.

The street lighting stock operates to WCC’s part-night lighting policy and is controlled by the PLANet by Telensa central management system. One of our main drivers is to reduce our electricity consumption wherever possible and we have been extremely successful in doing so through the implementation of part-night lighting along with an investment in LED lighting and other low energy light sources.

The Street Lighting team is a small team that deal with maintenance, lighting on new developments, Highway improvement projects, and the provision of power supplies on the Highway for other uses such as CCTV and festive decorations.

We are now recruiting for a Street Lighting Technician to join the Street Lighting team to primarily work in the Client maintenance function of the service.
