The Department of Physics seeks to appoint a Research Fellow to work on developing Agile electronics based on integration of 2D materials with ferroelectrics. The successful candidate will join a program aimed towards exploring new artificial heterostructure systems that combine ultrathin ferroelectrics with other types of materials, especially 2D van-der-Waals semiconductors, exploiting reduced dimensionality and interfacial interactions to control the properties and engineer new functionalities in these artificial materials.
The work will involve: device fabrication and characterisation, which include structural, ferroelectric and semiconductor measurements; A major part of the effort will be allocated to integrate the ferroelectric layers with 2D semiconductors to fabricate and characterise ferroelectric field effect transistors for next generation non-volatile memories and cognitive computing. The successful applicant will work as part of a team of researchers in this area at the University of Warwick, attached to a funded research project.
You should have a strong background in ferroelectrics, thin films and devices, semiconductor physics and/or local functional characterisation by atomic force microscopy. You will be an excellent communicator capable of working effectively both independently and as part of a research team. You will possess excellent planning and time management skills to ensure your research objectives are achieved effectively.
The start date of the position will be no later than 1st October 2023.

If you are near submission or have recently submitted your PhD but have not yet had it conferred, any offers of employment will be made as Research Assistant at the top of level 5 of the University grade structure (£32,411). Upon receipt of evidence of the successful award of your PhD, you will be promoted to Research Fellow on the first point of level 6 of the University grade structure (£33,348).
We will consider applications for employment on a part-time or other flexible working basis, even where a position is advertised as full-time, unless there are operational or other objective reasons why it is not possible to do so.

Job Description
Undertake research in on developing Agile electronics based on integration of 2D materials with ferroelectrics in order to support the work of the department and develop and enhance its reputation, both internally and externally. Work with project members in the successful execution of the project.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Research and scholarship
- Deposition and characterisation of perovskite oxides by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) for integration with 2D materials.
- Investigation of basic film properties by common characterisation tools (e.g. XRD, AFM, XRD, etc.).
- Fabrication of basic and advanced devices involving photolithography and microfabrication and subsequent electrical characterization.
- Developing advanced electronic investigations using photo-induced spectroscopy and time-of-flight experiments.
- Perform AFM-based measurements, electronic transport and susceptibility measurements, synchrotron X-Ray investigations.
- To compile quarterly reports on activity/results, and to present these at project meetings.
- To contribute to final reports and deliverables.
- To be able to work both independently and in a team consistent with the aims of the funded project and to be able to collaborate with scientists and assist in the training and supervision of students.
- Perform independent scientific research either as a member of a team or independently.
- Publish results in high ranking international journals and present results at relevant conferences.
- Submit applications to external funding sources for additional financial support if appropriate.
- Supervision of honours, masters and PhD students.
- Foster the existing links to national and international collaborators.
- Contribute to other projects within the research group.
- Assume minor administrative duties when required.
