Research Assistant

We have an exciting opportunity for a highly talented and motivated research assistant to join Professor Madalena Tarsounas’ research group. The research in our lab focuses on investigating how BRCA1 and BRCA2 facilitate DNA replication and DNA double-strand break repair using cell/molecular biology approaches and high-throughput technologies and bioinformatics. As a researcher, you are expected to address questions and plan, execute, and analyse the experimental procedures with the guideline of senior researchers. Your contribution to paper publication as well as lab maintenance is encouraged. Responsibilities include using bioinformatics to analyse data generated by high-throughput sequencing technologies (e.g. RNA-seq) and validating results using molecular biology techniques including cell culture, RT-qPCR and microscopy. You will provide advice and guidance to research students and members of the research group where appropriate.

You will manage your own research and administrative activities, within guidelines provided by senior colleagues, contribute to wider project planning, including ideas for new research projects and determine the most appropriate methodologies to test hypotheses, and identify suitable alternatives if technical problems arise. You would need to select, follow and adapt experimental protocols

You will hold a first degree, along with some relevant experience. You will possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to work within established research programmes. Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write text that can be published, present data at conferences, and represent the research group at meetings, is essential. You will have a proven ability in managing your own research and administrative activities and following and adapting protocols. You will have a sound understanding of following and adapting protocols and selecting appropriate experimental methodologies.

This is a full-time post offered for six months with the possibility of extending to 12 months.
