Cross-site Band 6 roles suited to experienced and registered Biomedical Scientists with a Cellular Pathology background seeking new challenges in a large laboratory with multiple specialties. Several posts are to be appointed and so applications are encouraged from those with experience in routine histopathology and from those with specialist skills e.g. andrology, Mohs or EM.

Cellular Pathology is a multi-site diagnostic laboratory operating across the Trust with main labs at BHH and QEHB. It includes andrology, cytopathology, electron microscopy, histology, Mohs and musculoskeletal pathology as well as post mortem/mortuary facilities across the UHB sites and have approximately 200 staff. We also work closely with our colleagues in Molecular Pathology.

Pre-registration Biomedical Scientists with relevant current competencies may be considered for this post but the successful candidate would be required to sign a learning contract to bridge any gaps in their qualifications.

Main duties, tasks & skills required

The post holder will be involved with the day to day activities in the laboratory. This may include specimen receipt; labelling and accessioning; specimen dissection; tissue processing; microtomy; staining sections; QC; verification/validation; andrology; cytology; Mohs; filing/archiving clinical materials; maintaining stock levels; maintaining equipment and laboratory instruments.

The post holder will be expected to undertake any training required and to maintain competency including and a specialist level understanding of all the processes they participate in. All professionally registered staff are expected to maintain evidence of Continuing Professional Development which should be up to date and relevant to the post. Specialist training and development will be supported.

Qualifications

Essential

BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science or

equivalent academic achievement that is

ratified by the Institute of Biomedical

Science (IBMS).

Professional registration with Health and

Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Post registration specialist competency

portfolio or equivalent

Evidence of continuing professional

development and proficiency in

accordance with HCPC guidelines

Experience

Essential

Experience of working in clinical

laboratories commensurate with the

laboratory position.

Experience of laboratory techniques and

automation.

Experience of dealing with suppliers,

clinical and support staff, the public or

customer care.

A working knowledge of:

Biomedical Science theory and practice

(Haematology, Transfusion, Biochemistry,

Microbiology and Cellular Pathology).

Quality control and assurance practices. )

Laboratory health and safety.

HCPC and IBMS professional standards,

ethics and proficiencies.
