About us

The UCL Estates Operations team manages a property portfolio of over 645,000m2 of diverse real estate on behalf of UCL, supporting over 48,000 student and nearly 15,000 staff. Managing an in house UCL workforce of 250 staff and a contractor workforce of over 1,000, the primary function of the division is to provide all Facilities Management services including, cleaning, security and maintenance. The Estates Direct Labour Operative (DLO) team provides a comprehensive on-call service both responding to emergencies but also undertaking works where access is a problem during normal hours. With the University becoming more commonly used out of normal study and research times, there is an increase in the number of emergencies and equipment breakdowns that the maintenance team are required to attend to.

About the role

This is an exciting opportunity to support the DLO Maintenance Operations team in helping them respond to planned and reactive tasks across the campus on a wide range of systems and services. As a CHP Operative, you will be responsible for carrying out reactive and planned electrical maintenance/repairs to high standards of safety, customer service and efficiency. You will work on MTHW and steam boilers, CHP plant, district heating plant and their associated control systems, investigate, analyse and repair faults on Utilities plant and equipment, respond to breakdown, fault and service request calls, and assist other tradesmen in completing diagnostic work and then carry out any remedial work. You will be expected to complete tasks in line with current health and safety requirements, statutory requirements and to a high standard. An essential part of this role will be communicating as you will be working directly with stakeholders, and term contractors to complete works and keep the University functioning.

About you

Practical experience and training in the operation and maintenance of pipework fabrication equipment is essential, as is the ability to undertake basic fault finding using diagnostic equipment, BMS, mechanical and electrical drawings, manuals and personal experience. You should have the experience, understanding and ability to monitor plant status, interpret alarms, etc. You will have experience working in a large and complex organisation, preferably in a higher education institution or comparable environment. You’ll be confident, organised and able to work under pressure, prioritise work tasks and be able to communicate with stakeholders as well as colleagues at all levels. You will have sound literacy and numeracy skills, a willingness and ability to work flexibly across a range of sites/buildings and adjust hours of work to provide optimal service to customers and a commitment to delivering an excellent service.
