About us

We are one of the world’s leading research centres for the study of prions and their wider relevance to neurodegenerative disease with a growing research activity in Alzheimer’s disease (www.prion.ucl.ac.uk). The Institute is highly multidisciplinary with close integration of structural and molecular biology, genetics, cellular and animal models, small molecule and immuno-therapeutics and clinical research. MRC and UCL have jointly invested £30 million in provision of a dedicated new building in central London for the Institute supporting the vision to expand research in protein misfolding and aggregation in neurodegenerative disease.

About the role

We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic and dynamic Clinical Fellow on a 9 month contract to join a well-established innovative specialist prion disease team at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. We are a sociable, progressive, multidisciplinary team providing expert diagnostics, advice, education, research and support to patients with all forms of prion disease. The Clinic is a tertiary referral centre providing a multidisciplinary approach to the clinical and research challenges presented by human prion disease. Consultant staff includes Professor John Collinge, Professor Simon Mead, and Dr Tze How Mok. The appointee would work as part of the National Prion Clinic team with particular responsibility for the clinical assessment and management of patients referred with a possible diagnosis of prion disease throughout the UK. The Clinic is closely integrated with the MRC Prion Unit at UCL which carries out world leading basic and clinical research in neurodegenerative diseases with a particular focus on development of therapeutics for prion infection. Applicants may have completed integrated medical training but this is not essential, they must hold GMC registration and preferably MRCP/MRCPsych (or equivalent). Those with NTNs seeking a period out of program (OOPE) for research or sub-specialist training are encouraged to apply. Previous research experience is not essential although, for suitable candidates, there may be an opportunity to extend the post and study for a higher degree (MD/PhD). Individuals with a higher degree wishing to participate in post-doctoral clinical research or sub-specialist clinical training in neurodegeneration will also be considered as will Staff grade neurologists. We will consider applications to work on a part-time, flexible and job share basis wherever possible. This appointment is subject to UCL Terms and Conditions of Service for Academic Staff. Please visit https://www.ucl.ac.uk/human-resources/policies/2021/jun/conditions-service-academic-staff for more information.
