Ever wanted to have the opportunity to work across a multi-platform media company?

Love the idea of writing across printed publications, websites, appearing on the radio and delivering a countywide podcast?

Here is a rare opportunity to join an organisation able to offer you all of that, and a chance to become a qualified journalist.

Tindle’s newspapers, websites and radio stations are at the very heart of the communities they serve, sharing the best of the people who keep them going while also playing a vital role in holding authorities to account.

The way journalism is told is changing, and we are proud to be at the centre of those changes. We are now looking for our very first Multimedia Journalists to join a brand-new scheme aimed at providing the next generation of journalists with all the skills they will need to succeed.

This exciting two-year scheme is unique to Tindle, offering a fantastic route into journalism. You would work on our radio stations, websites and print products, learning the basic skills required to succeed in every field. From putting together, a news bulletin to writing a front page splash, creating digital-first copy to drive page views, or pitching and recording a podcast, there is no element of journalism we will leave untouched.

The scheme would last for 24 months, and your time would be divided as follows:

  • Three months each with a newspaper team / digital team / Midlands 103 / Channel 103 (exact locations to be confirmed)
  • 12 months specialising in one centre

Throughout this time, you will also undertake the NCTJ Diploma in Journalism, ensuring you receive training to help you succeed.

Newspaper:

Newspapers provide the cornerstone of news as we know it, with many of our Tindle titles dating back more than a century. We pride ourselves on being embedded within the communities that we serve, reporting on all of the events, news and people which help make our towns and villages so special.

You would learn how the newspaper is put together, the art to writing a good news story and the importance of deadlines. Your day-to-day role would involve making new contacts, digging out stories and uploading your content to the websites. Our print journalists are also multimedia journalists, and as part of a newsroom you will learn how to create and upload videos to support your articles, as well as taking the perfect photograph to compliment your work.

We have titles based in Wales, the southwest and the south east of England and on the Isle of Man, but the ethos is the same: we are here to serve our communities.

Channel Islands radio:

Channel 103 is Jersey’s most-loved radio station, and our news output is consistently cited by our listeners as one of the main reasons they tune in. According to industry standard RAJAR figures, Channel 103 has the highest weekly reach of any radio station, BBC or commercial, anywhere in the British Isles!

During your time at Channel 103 you’ll gain valuable broadcast journalism experience in a radio newsroom.

You’ll be working on a variety of local news stories, learning how to craft engaging radio script, how to find and set up interviews, news reading, audio editing as well as how to put together compelling news bulletins that appeal to our audience and are fully compliant with Ofcom broadcast regulations.

Jersey’s a unique place to live and work – part of the British Isles but not the UK, close to France with great beaches, restaurants and bars, with its own system of government.

Digital team:

Tindle Newspapers’ digital team is constantly expanding, working on hyperlocal content designed to capture the interest of our growing audience, driving both page views and engagement.

While working with the digital team you will learn how to write for the web, what makes a great social media post and the importance of SEO. We’ll teach you how to interpret analytics to develop content ideas, create articles which engage our audiences and learn how to enhance your content using a variety of audio and visual tools.

As part of a remote team, you will have the opportunity to work with editors and write for websites across the UK and the Isle of Man.

Ireland:

Midlands 103 is one of Ireland’s largest local radio stations, with 122,000 adults tuning in weekly. It is a broad-format service, with contemporary music and talk during primetime, with specialist music and topical discussion off-peak.

A digital innovator, Midlands 103 is investing heavily in podcast development for 2023 and produces white-label audio for third party clients.

You will be working on the preparation of current affairs/light entertainment programming and digital content, informed by audience research and the different regulatory environment in Ireland.

Midlands 103 is headquartered in Tullamore, County Offaly, which is a rural catchment steeped in Ireland’s famous hospitality and cultural landscape.

This position is only open to applicants who have the legal right to work in the British Isles and the Republic of Ireland. You must be prepared to relocate three times in the first year, but support will be provided to help find accommodation and complete visas.

Salary: £21,000 pro-rata weighted for time spent overseas.

PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU WILL NEED TO COMPLETE THE WRITTEN COMMUNICATION AND ATTENTION TO DETAIL TEST TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY.
