Senior Prosecution Case Manager

We have a very exciting opportunity to join our Legal / Prosecutions department as a Senior Prosecution Case Manager to make a difference to animal welfare and deliver justice for animals.

We have two permanent vacancies, which we can offer on either a full time (35 hours per week) or a part time basis.

This really is a very interesting and rewarding role. The RSPCA takes a leading role in investigating and prosecuting animal welfare offences in England and Wales.

Here's some of the key work that you will be doing...

As Senior Prosecutions Case Manager, you will advise, make decisions to prosecute and direct on investigations and casework relating to animal welfare offences for all species of animals and wildlife including early intervention and direction in large and complex cases.

Animal welfare investigations can involve distressing facts, circumstances and imagery of animal cruelty and abuse, so it will be important that the post holder can stay objective.

You must be confident enough to work fairly autonomously and make decisions independently whilst working collaboratively and collegiately with the Head of Prosecution and a highly committed and experienced team.

You will liaise regularly and be advising on investigations carried out by RSPCA Inspectors and be providing advice, guidance and support to the inspectors directly and in writing; therefore excellent communication and drafting skills are essential.

You will assist external legal providers (solicitors and barristers) in relation to the prosecution of cases in both the Magistrates and Crown Court and will assist the Head of Prosecutions in responding to any enquiries or complaints and Parliamentary queries.

As a Senior Prosecutions Case Manager, you will contribute to the learning and development of the Inspectorate and other external agencies on topics relating to and enhancing the work of animal welfare enforcement.

You will provide legal and casework advice and guidance and need to keep up to date with case law, legislation and The Criminal Procedure Rules.

We have an office hub in London, Blackfriars and one in Horsham, West Sussex. We can offer the post holder a flexible hybrid approach; working from both home and the office or working completely remotely from home, in line with our ‘Hybrid and Working at Home' policies, as long as they are based in the UK and have the right to work in the UK independently of visa sponsorship.

What we are looking for in you...

• The post holder must be a legally qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Fellow of CiLEx for England and Wales (There is no requirement to hold a current Practicing Certificate for this post but if not, the post holder must provide evidence that a valid practicing certificate has previously been issued to the post holder)
• Knowledge and experience of the procedures for managing and conducting cases in the Magistrates and the Crown Court including an understanding of the youth court procedure in England and Wales.
• Knowledge and experience of criminal laws, evidence and procedure.
• Knowledge and experience of providing written advice on evidence and criminal offences in line with The CPS Code for Crown Prosecutors
• Knowledge and experience of case analysis and management.
• Knowledge of the Private Prosecution procedure.
• Knowledge of animal cruelty legislation in England and Wales.
• Knowledge of UK data protection laws.

Due to the nature of the role, it is also important that you have the ability to:

• Cope with cases of a distressing nature.
• Communicate well both in writing and verbally
• Liaise with external providers
• Cope with high volumes of work.
• Adapt and cope through periods of change
• Work in a team environment
• Motivate people in difficult circumstances.
