Lecturer in Marine Sciences (Coastal Processes)

Based in the Faculty of Science and Engineering, the School of Biological and Marine Sciences is primed to enable students to achieve their ambitions by linking research to real world problems. Students are equipped with the skills they need to make a positive impact on the sustainability of our environment and society. Our programmes are grouped into three subject areas: inspiring change for a more sustainable future with biological sciences; protecting the diversity of marine life on our planet with marine biology; and exploring, understanding and protecting our ocean systems with marine science. The Marine Sciences team within the School of Biological & Marine Sciences at the University of Plymouth is seeking to appoint a new Lecturer who can make a meaningful contribution to the Coastal Processes Research Group. Expertise of particular interest to the group would include applications of remote sensing in the coastal environment, the use of big data to further understanding of coastal processes, numerical model development for investigations of the coastal environment, or studies of inner-shelf dynamics which shed light on interactions between the nearshore and adjoining shelf sea environments. You will be a highly motivated and dynamic academic who will be expected to introduce new capabilities to the globally recognised Coastal Processes Research Group (CPRG), a key contributor to the marine portfolio in a university with a top 5 global ranking in marine science impact. CPRG on its own controls an equipment inventory worth over £2M and new appointees can expect a startup allowance to facilitate new research lines. Our Marine Science team has internationally recognised expertise in field and numerical studies of coastal processes, studies of fundamental physical processes in marine systems, assessment of the impacts of human activity on marine systems, and a growing expertise in marine autonomous systems. The team is embedded in the School of Biological and Marine Sciences with a wide range of research expertise and degree programme delivery.

This role is closely aligned to our BSc programmes in Oceanography and Coastal Processes and Ocean Exploration and Surveying, and the postgraduate programmes, MSc Applied Marine Science, and MSc Hydrography, but you will also have the opportunity to contribute to teaching across the Marine Sciences Subject Group https://www.plymouth.ac.uk/schools/school-of-biological-and-marine-sciences/marine-science

You will have a doctoral degree in a relevant field, supported by experience at postdoctoral or equivalent level, and a proven research track record demonstrated through high calibre outputs of a quality likely to contribute to our future UK Research Excellence Framework (REF) submission. Clear evidence of successful grant applications as a PI is desirable.

This is a full-time position working 37 hours per week on a permanent basis.
