The shift pattern for this post is worked over 2 or 3 days including one evening till 8.00pm.

The Counsellor will be trained to post-graduate Diploma in Counselling level (or equivalent) from an accredited establishment and will have a minimum of 2 years post-qualifying experience; they will work within SCASS which includes work in specialist counselling areas, e.g. Young People’s Service, Archway, Gender identity, Sexual Identity. The Counsellor will have expert knowledge of working with trauma & appropriate therapeutic interventions. They will work autonomously to provide individual counselling to young people and adults; this will include counselling assessments & risk assessments. The counsellor will manage a caseload of clients who present with a range of sensitive moderate to severe issues.

Key duties and responsibilities:

  • To provide time limited counselling to SCASS clients presenting with a range of needs including client’s with complex issues, e.g. resulting from traumatic life experiences.
  • To provide intake assessments by engaging and responding sensitively to both the individual and the issues they disclose, involving often the eliciting of highly sensitive information, sometimes through interpreters.
  • To work with the client to decide the most appropriate plan of action, addressing the level of need in relation to the demands on the service.
  • To plan, deliver and evaluate the interventions and or treatments when there are complex issues and or serious illness.
  • To work with the client to assess their needs and develop a therapeutic plan which will address those needs drawing appropriately on specialist areas of expertise as necessary, including those involved in childhood sexual abuse, rape and other trauma.
  • To write-up and maintain client records to required standards and the use of the computerized system, NASH.
  • To offer a Listening Ear session either face to face or on the telephone when the demands upon this service exceed appointments available.
  • To work within a multi-disciplinary team and maintain appropriate boundaries and levels of confidentiality.
  • To contribute to service development, monitoring and evaluation, by providing information and statistics as required, by the Counselling Team Leader or members of Sandyford Management Team.
