About the Trust – Rated ‘Good’ in their most recent CQC report, Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (GMMH) provides inpatient and community-based mental health care for Bolton, Manchester, Salford, Trafford and Wigan. The Trust also provides a wide range of specialist mental health and substance misuse services for patients from Greater Manchester and beyond. The Role:

The Successful candidate will work with the ward based staff providing advice, information, advocacy and support to substance misusers undergoing detoxification and stabilization.

You will be responsible for the assessment of care needs, development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care.

You will be expected to supervise the junior staff and assist in meeting the training and development needs of the ward / department.

What you’ll be responsible for

· To adhere to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct

· Maintain custody and safety of drugs in accordance with NMC guidance and local policy.

· Ensure at all times that records are maintained in accordance with NMC/local policy guidance on record keeping.

· To participate in working groups/special projects as required. Supervise, support and monitor junior staff in their work.

· To act at all times in a manner that safeguards and promotes the interests of individual patients. Undertake the role of the Primary Nurse / Key worker for patients with substance misuse and alcohol problems

· Working with patients who have complex physical and mental health problems in the context of substance and alcohol misuse issues.

· To assist in general duties on and off the ward, with both patient activities and other service needs.

· To perform extended nursing role duties, which include intravenous therapy, peripheral canulation, ECG’s, and Venepuncture.

· To contribute to the therapeutic group work programme specifically in relation to general health care needs.

· To implement, monitor and review care plans for patients on the ward in consultation with the service users themselves.

· To encourage and support service users to adopt safer practices and healthier lifestyles. Administer medication in accordance with Trust policy and procedure

· To participate in the delivery of ITEP mapping and other psychosocial interventions as appropriate. To participate and contribute to service development initiatives as directed by the Ward Manager.

· To have an awareness and appreciation of regulations laid down by the 1983 Mental Health Act.

You’ll have the following qualification/experience:

  • Registered Nurse (RGN)-Valid NMC Pin
  • Extended nursing skills (IV therapy, Venepuncture, ECG recording)
  • A minimum of two years’ experience working with clients in a health or social care setting
  • Experience of assessing clients health and social care needs
  • Experience of providing support to vulnerable/social excluded individuals/groups
  • Experience of working as part of a team in order to achieve a shared vision/goal
  • Experience of maintaining quality standards in ones work
  • Knowledge of the physical, psychological and social effects of substance misuse and appropriate interventions
  • Understanding of current national policy and initiatives in relation to working in the substance misuse field
  • Knowledge of equal opportunities legislation
  • An awareness of policies & procedures in relation to confidentiality, information sharing, and child protection
  • Ability to handle challenging situations and behave in a professional manner
  • Ability to communicate with a wide range of people including: carers, members of the public and other professionals
  • To have a positive regard for substance misusers and to understand the importance of involving them in their care
  • Ability to use initiative but to consult with others when necessary
  • Motivated to work towards creating a safe, open & trusting environment
  • Commitment to one’s own professional development
  • Effective and coherent oral and written communication skills
  • IT skills and ability to use Microsoft Word, Internet and e-mails
