The Role

This post is to support on-going research within the Biosciences Institute and the Wellcome Centre for Mitochondrial Research. You will have a very strong background in intestinal biology and mitochondrial metabolism in cancer cells, ideally with expertise in histology, high-throughput imaging and image analysis, working with human tissues and mouse models of intestinal cancer. You will require excellent laboratory skills, particularly in histology, immunofluorescence, fluorescence microscopy and Home Office licensed procedures.

You will be working in the Wellcome Centre for Mitochondrial Research under the supervision of Dr Laura Greaves and will be investigating the role of altered mitochondrial metabolism in intestinal cancer development. You will be responsible for generating and analysing novel mouse models of intestinal cancer.

You will use your knowledge and experience of mitochondrial metabolism in the gut and functional changes that occur during intestinal tumorigenesis to deliver this challenging project.

The post is available on a fixed term basis for 3 years on a full time basis, however applications for part-time working will also be considered

Key Accountabilities
Develop and carry out the specified project using appropriate techniques and equipment as outlined in the person specification
Plan and carry out independent original research encompassing investigations leading to the discovery of new knowledge
Analyse data, interpret and bring new insights
Initiate or participate in inter-disciplinary collaborations as agreed with supervisor
Provide guidance, where necessary, to other staff and students including possible supervision of PhD and undergraduate project students as agreed with supervisor
Regular liaison with the Principal Investigator to organise workload and research activities, using appropriate materials, facilities and equipment
In conjunction with the Principal Investigator ensure availability and maintenance of equipment and material requirements for the research, including placing orders and maintaining records of stock level
Write up research findings for publication and dissemination

The Person (Essential)

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Excellent communication, team-working and interpersonal skills
Experience in mitochondrial biology
Extensive knowledge of intestinal cancer biology
Extensive experience of working with mouse models of intestinal cancer
Excellent skills in preparing both mouse and human tissues for histological analysis
Excellent skills in fluorescence microscopy and high-throughput image analysis
Able to provide and present reports on research to high standard
Able to collaborate effectively across disciplinary boundaries
Able to oversee managerial projects (lab organisation)
Public engagement experience

Qualifications
Excellent (1st/2:1) primary degree, or equivalent international degree
Possession of a doctoral degree in mitochondrial biology/genetics/intestinal cancer, for Associate level or nearing PhD completion for Assistant level
Home office PILAB or modules 1-3
