The Role

We are looking for a Bioinformatic Technician to join the laboratory of Professor Muzlifah Haniffa at Newcastle University.

The research program aims to dissect the developing and adult human immune system using disruptive single cell multiomic technologies. This research theme leverages resources within the second Haniffa lab site at Wellcome Sanger Institute, and within the wider Human Cell Atlas consortium ( https://www.humancellatlas.org ).

You should have excellent team-working and time management skills. Due to the collaborative and interdisciplinary nature of the research team, the ideal candidate will be comfortable with project leadership alongside minor contribution to multiple research projects.

Expertise in bioinformatic techniques using any programming language is essential; experience of Python, R and shell scripting would be advantageous for this particular post but can be learnt within the role. 5 GCSEs or equivalent (passes A – C) including English, Maths and Biology are required but a HND/HNC or a BSc is preferred.

The post will be located in state-of-art laboratories housed within the Biosciences Institute, Newcastle University and will have access to excellent dedicated core research facilities including the bioinformatics support unit, flow cytometry, mass cytometry and a newly-established single-cell genomics unit.

This is a full time post, fixed term until 31 October 2024

Key Accountabilities
The post-holder will be responsible to Prof. Muzlifah Haniffa, Biosciences Institute, Newcastle University. The main focus of this post is to provide technical bioinformatics support for the organisation and daily management of analysis tasks in the Haniffa Lab
To operate as a team member, aiding other members within the research group with analysis and interpretation of biological data and making appropriate recommendations
Maintain an up to date knowledge of bioinformatic tools used for single cell analysis to share with wider team, and to keep up to date with research articles relating to developmental biology projects you assist with
To support project delivery: data wrangling tasks for data sharing with collaborators, evaluating and ensuring reproducible bioinformatic pipelines are applied to data, ensuring methodologies applied are adequately documented in manuscript methods and on code repositories, communication of findings with external stakeholders via email and virtual video call
To, on occasions, facilitate other aspects of the Haniffa group including contribution to laboratory meetings, and contribution to its public engagement activities
To be expected to work flexibly as required by the needs of the research work, including out of hours

The Person (Essential)

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Experience with bioinformatics tools and languages, such as R / Python and shell scripting
Excellent communication and team-working skills
Ability to independently lead projects with initiative
Good time management and organisational skills; be able to work to agreed deadlines
Good IT & computer skills, including spreadsheets
