We are looking for a passionate clinician with research experience in tropical and infectious diseases in clinical and/or community settings in low and middle-income countries (LMICs).

In this role, you will function at consultant level - reviewing, treating and following up returned travellers and other patients with tropical infections; providing advice on the management of frequently seen conditions such as helminth infections; schistosomiasis; malaria, leishmaniasis, hydatid among others.

You will also provide strategic leadership in tropical medicine and infectious diseases and champion the specialty through interactions across the organisation and with key partners in the UK & LMICs. This includes the Liverpool University Hospitals Foundation Trust, as well as in our global hubs in Malawi, Kenya, Uganda, and Zimbabwe.

Part of the role will include providing expert advice and support on clinical tropical and infectious diseases for the development and delivery of the postgraduate courses and clinical placements we offer. Identifying new strategic research opportunities and funding and developing our partnerships in low- and middle-income countries will also form key aspects of the academic role.

  • LSTM has long-standing partnership with the nearby Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (LUHFT), which hosts the regional Tropical and Infectious Diseases Unit (TIDU)
  • We run a pre-travel clinic, tropical outpatient clinic and an on-call advice service at LSTM
  • Our largest non-UK partner, the Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Clinical Research Programme (MLW) in Malawi has strong research record in clinical & experimental medicine, population health, vaccination implementation & impact, infection biology, maternal, neonatal & child health and social sciences
  • Interventions and population research for malaria is focused in the KEMRI-CDC-LSTM collaboration in Kisumu, western Kenya

Your role will include, but not be limited to:

Research:

  • Identifying new strategic research opportunities in parasitology and/or tropical and infectious disease, which have the potential for significant growth and promote engagement and collaboration with external academic organisations and funders
  • Creating opportunities for, and support, monitor and advance the development of early- and mid-career researchers in parasitology and tropical infectious disease
  • Overseeing and participate in research degree supervision and examination
  • Assisting in the implementation of LSTM-wide strategies and policies for research and the research environment, including those relating to inclusion and equity

Clinical Commitment

  • Potential opportunity to contribute regular clinical sessions to TIDU at LUHFT and/or or other local clinical setting and/or offer clinical outpatient sessions within the Tropical Outpatient clinic at LSTM and to participate in the tropical on-call phone rota
  • Engage and network with clinical colleagues through membership of the LSTM clinical reference group and relevant multi-disciplinary groups at LUHFT
  • Undertake Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities to maintain professional registration and meet revalidation requirements

  • Support the development and implementation of LSTM’s partnership strategy to continue to grow and develop our global strategic partnerships
  • Embed co-developed principles of equitable partnership in all our activities
  • Increase partner representation, diversity and voice within our programmes

Leadership and Management

  • Articulate and deliver academic vision and leadership within individual area of expertise at international level
  • Take leadership role in policy dialogue at regional, national, and global levels that help effect change based on reliable research led evidence
  • Effectively lead, manage, and mentor a team of senior academic and business support staff, setting standards, monitoring progress & overseeing delegated areas of responsibility
  • Proactively ensure that all relevant legal, health & safety and quality assurance requirements are adhered to personally

The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

PhD qualification or equivalent in a relevant subject area

  • Clinical registration with the General Medical Council or equivalent medical governing body
  • Extensive knowledge of subject area informed by substantial current research in the field
  • Professional qualification and/or fellowship in Higher Education Teaching and Learning Experience
  • Outstanding record of international level peer reviewed original publications and research, including in relation to low or middle-income countries
  • Strong record of successfully generating significant/high prestige external funding (grants, contracts etc.) to support research projects
  • Proven record of research leadership in a HEI and experience of developing multidisciplinary research programmes (including stakeholders from academia, industry, MOH etc. for example)
  • Considerable leadership and management experience, including the effective use of resources and budgetary responsibility and evidence of the capacity to assume further, major leadership roles within and outside LSTM
  • Proven experience of effective curriculum development and making a significant contribution to teaching and learning strategy
