Applications are invited from outstanding individuals for a Lecturer/ Senior Lecturer / Reader in Conservation Science and Practice, Centre for Environmental Policy(CEP). The Centre for Environmental Policy is developing its commitment to environmental sustainability through a new program in conservation science and practice. This position is created to serve the new initiative, while working across the Department in broader areas of environmental sustainability.


Duties and responsibilities

You will be a key staff member providing expertise in conservation science and practice. You will undertake research scholarship and specialist teaching in collaboration with other staff and will participate in the development and management of the MSc in Conservation Science and Practice, and provide teaching for the Core Course and the Environmental Resource Management Option of the MSc in Environmental Technology, as appropriate.

You will be engaged with research, education, and administrative duties in alignment with the Centre’s strategy, goals and vision. Among your research duties, you will direct a research programme at the highest scientifically rigorous levels, supervise, train and mentor research staff and students, obtain funds and research grants and encourage and guide junior research staff to do the same, and establish links with industry. You will teach and examine courses at all levels and supervise PhD, MSc and MSci theses. You will also undertake appropriate administrative tasks in support of the department’s teaching and research activities and attend relevant academic or management committees.

Essential requirements



  • PhD (or equivalent) in disciplines relevant to biological conservation science and practice

  • A reputation (commensurate with career stage) and expertise in the field of conservation science and practice

  • A significant or sustained track record (commensurate with career stage) in attracting high levels of research funding in relevant areas of conservation science and practice

  • Extensive experience in leading the design of research programmes

  • An excellent record of research, evidenced by a portfolio of research publications, confirming national/ international standing (commensurate with career stage)

  • A record of research in the field of policy/conservation science/practice, underpinned by a relevant list of publications commensurate with career stage.

  • Experience of and interest in working at the science/conservation/policy interface

  • Experience in training Undergraduate and Postgraduate students

  • Experience in supervision of higher degrees (PhD)

  • Evidence of management and administration experience

  • Ability to communicate well, conveying ideas and concepts clearly and effectively

Further information

Starting salary:

From £73,806 per annum for Reader;

From £68,313 – £71,264 per annum for Senior Lecturer

From £62,768 – £71,264 per annum for Lecturer
