Job description

The main goal of this role is to protect people and property from flooding. This role will develop your technical, influencing and team working skills to influence development through our regulatory role in planning and permitting, building relationships with partners such as councils and engaging with a variety of customers on flood risk matters. You will also support and lead on flood risk modelling and larger projects.

A typical week may involve:
  • Analysing planning & permit applications and influencing developers to manage/improve flood risk
  • Contributing to projects, building business cases for flood alleviation projects
  • Working alongside councils and communities to improve flood risk management
  • Collaborating to achieve multiple benefits e.g., carbon savings, ecology gain, flood benefits
  • Training on planning/engineering/modelling
  • Catchment/project site visits
  • Supporting our incident response responsibilities
  • Data management

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.
The team
The Partnership & Strategic Overview teams develop our understanding of flood and coastal risk and work with our partners to manage the risk.
We develop new schemes and strategies to reduce flood risk, influence development and issue Flood Risk Activity Permits. We also commission and assure flood models.
The team is actively inclusive and collectively we support one another. You will be welcomed and provided with all the training and guidance needed to be successful.
Experience/skills required
The following skills are essential:

  • Good IT skills particularly relating to the Microsoft Office suite
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to prioritise busy and complex workloads to meet deadlines
  • Ability to understand technical information and ideas

The following qualities/experience are useful:

  • Flood and coastal risk management or related knowledge or experience
  • Experience of working with members of the public, consultants, and professional partners
  • Knowledge of the Environment Agency's flood risk management responsibilities
  • Understanding of Town and Country planning principles
  • ArcGIS skills and an understanding of using outputs from flood risk models
  • Qualification in geography, Environmental Science, Engineering or similar

A full UK driving licence is essential. This role involves regular travel to meet with partners and undertake site visits.
