Heritage Officer / Senior Heritage Officer / Principal
Heritage Officer (Heritage and Design team)
Career graded salary starting at £30,188 with potential for fast track career development

We are offering two exciting opportunities for either a graduate with no experience in heritage or an experienced heritage professional to join our Heritage and Design team.

Why join Canterbury?
We have an ambitious growth agenda and our heritage is an important asset to support the local economy and deliver growth and regeneration within the district. Canterbury District is renowned
for its fantastic heritage, including the World Heritage Site within Canterbury city centre and you will be part of the Heritage and Design team that plays a fundamental role in shaping the future
of the District for future generations to come.

You will also be part of a friendly, supportive and motivated team that is empowered to create positive change within the District.

Who we are looking for

Whether you are starting out your career in Heritage and Conservation or have previous experience, we are looking for a highly motivated and capable person who will be empowered to take professional responsibility for their own work and support the Heritage and Design team to secure the future for our heritage.

You will work closely with Planning Officers in the Development Management team to provide them with high quality heritage and conservation advice (including major strategic developments), as well as playing a key role in the delivery of corporate projects. In the course of your work, you will also work closely and collaboratively with Historic England, local councillors and interest groups.

Career progression is important to us
This role will allow you to ‘fast track’ your career in Heritage and Conservation, through varied and challenging work experience alongside study.

We will ensure that you gain the necessary professional qualifications to progress your career.
Depending on your qualifications, this may include sending you on a Masters degree in Architectural Conservation at the University of Kent on a day release basis.

Work / life balance is important to us too
The Council is committed to flexible working and so the role is not office-based. The successful candidate(s) will work remotely as well as on-site, visiting sites across the district.

We also understand the importance of work/life balance and so the role is also open to candidates who may wish to work part-time.

Alongside the professional opportunities this role provides, the Council offers a range of other benefits:
  • Mainly virtual working;
  • Flexi-time, where you can accrue an extra day off a month
  • Technology to support working in flexible locations
  • Access to the Local Government Pension Scheme
  • Paid annual professional membership
  • In addition to annual leave entitlement, a further two days leave between Christmas and New Year, so that staff do not work over the Christmas period
  • Professional and management training

What you need to apply
If not yet qualified in Heritage and Conservation, you will hold a relevant undergraduate degree, for example history or architecture, a relevant discipline or studying for a degree level qualification and/or equivalent level of experience.

Due to the nature of this role, it is a politically restricted post.

A full driving licence and own car is essential.

Should you have any questions or would like to discuss the post in more detail, please contact Lizzy Johnson - Heritage and Design Manager on 07542266709 or email at Lizzy.johnson@canterbury.gov.uk
