We are looking for a leader in the area of AI ethics who can ensure we do the right thing. You’ll be understanding and assessing the value and risks of a wide variety of use cases, impacting customers, colleagues, partners and wider society. You’ll be collaborating with many different teams across BT, including business units, DS and AI teams, policy and legal, and advising senior stakeholders at director-level and above.

Your responsibilities will be to…
  • Shape our approach and principles for assessing AI ethics – advising, supporting and challenging colleague across the business so they can inform and follow these – taking the evolving international regulatory landscape into account
  • Lead assessments of AI projects, governance and activities from the perspective of ethics, responsibility and regulatory compliance – quantifying risks where appropriate and balancing those with potential value to the customer and/or society
  • Understand and clearly communicate the ethical and responsible innovation considerations of specific use cases – taking into account the technical, legal and policy perspectives
  • Lead and support our engagement and collaborations with relevant stakeholders inside and outside BT, including BT’s Responsible Innovation, Legal and Public Affairs teams
  • Provide actionable guidance and coaching to a range of stakeholders to ensure compliance with relevant data and AI governance processes – tailoring this to BT needs – both strategic and tactical
  • Challenge and refine high-level principles as well as appropriate technical processes and guardrails, working with technical leads and experts
  • Act as a voice for BT on ethics and responsible AI, providing thought leadership and challenge to senior stakeholders, director level and above
  • Develop and share case studies of how ethics and responsible AI creates customer and business value

What we are looking for from you…
  • 5+ years experience in leading data and/or AI ethics initiatives in a commercial setting
  • Proven success in collaborating with data scientists and in engaging and managing a complex set of stakeholders
  • Strong technical awareness of a range of AI techniques and approaches together with their pros and cons with respect to data and AI ethics
  • Strong communication and data presentation skills with the ability to build convincing recommendations and sell these to a non-technical audience
  • Strong understanding of data protection laws and relevant domestic and global regulation and policy developments
  • Demonstration of thought leadership through significant contributions to the wider AI ethics community
  • Flexible and agile work skills - comfortable working in a fast paced, highly collaborative, dynamic work environment
  • Coaching/mentoring experience
