The 50:50 Project Internal Lead oversees the delivery, growth and reporting of 50:50 progress inside the BBC. The role reports directly to the Creative Diversity Lead and supports all BBC and independent production teams producing BBC content enrolled in 50:50.

Please note, while this role is mapped as ‘HR Specialist’ it is not an HR role. It is essential for the Project Lead to have strong editorial and production knowledge, and is able to support content-making teams across News, Nations and Content with first-hand experience and understanding of their workflows and the BBC’s editorial values.

Main Responsibilities

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

  • Support all teams signed up to 50:50 help them achieve the 50:20:12 representation targets within the BBC. Advise on what and how they can monitor, and ensure clear understanding of the 50:50 methodology, core principles and targets.
  • Provide best practice support and tailored solutions relevant to the type of content, department and team.
  • Advise editorial and content teams on inclusive language, storytelling and guest booking, particularly in the context of the BBC’s wider D&I policies and editorial guidelines.
  • Champion diversity and inclusivity inside and outside the BBC

Project management

  • Work with the 50:50 Creative Diversity Lead, other team members, and the wider Creative Diversity and D&I team to drive the success of the 50:50 Project.
  • Manage all BBC-related aspects the project and support the growing number of BBC teams – currently over 700 monitoring gender and close to 300 monitoring disability and ethnicity representation.
  • Continue the expansion of 50:50 across other teams and with further diversity monitoring, including further piloting of socio-economic diversity monitoring.

Data collection and analysis

  • Lead on the collection, data analysis and reporting of the monthly project statistics.
  • Use excel to build spreadsheets for teams where needed and to store, collect and analyse project data.
  • Monitor and track trends to assist and support relevant teams.
  • Lead on administration of the new 50:50 Tracker, setting up new teams, ensuring records are accurate and up-to-date, and working closely with the 50:50 Tech lead to continue to develop the Tracker.
  • Train teams in the collection and monitoring of diversity data in compliance with UK Data Protection law.
  • Lead on the collection, data analysis and reporting of the monthly project statistics.
  • Monitor and track trends to assist and support relevant teams.
  • Liaise with BBC's statistics team, visual journalism, and Audience research to always ensure our data stands up to scrutiny, is shared in the most accessible and high impact way, and is of value to the audiences we are seeking to serve.

Communications

  • Present and promote 50:50 The Equality Project to individuals, teams and senior leadership through newsletters, blogs, video content and other available channels. Ensure all 50:50 content and events are fully accessible.
  • Help write, collate and produce reports on the progress and strategy of 50:50.
  • Work closely with internal comms and Press Office to publicise 50:50.
  • Advise diversity monitoring and audit how teams are counting and collecting data.
  • Co-ordinate the sharing of best practice and contacts.
  • Oversee and chair the 50:50 Super Champions network.
  • Speak at internal and external events to share the thinking behind 50:50.

Strategy

  • Work closely with the Creative Diversity Lead and Executive Leads across divisions to ensure 50:50 supports the BBC’s wider Creative Diversity strategy.
  • Maintain momentum and support teams to achieve their targets and through the 50:50 Challenge or other campaigns to drive progress through 50:50.
  • Plan events to support the 50:50 strategy and aims.
Are you the right candidate?
  • Proven excel, data collection and analysis skills, and confidence in collaboration tools such as MS Teams, Sharepoint and DropBox
  • Excellent people skills - able to both listen and show flexibility, and make one's own case persuasively and without conflict
  • Ability to effectively and assertively encourage people and programmes to meet their commitments to the project
  • Understanding and awareness of the BBC’s wider Diversity and Inclusion commitments and strategies
  • Confident & persuasive public speaker
  • Communicates, challenges and influences a variety of stakeholders effectively. Ability to present sound and well-reasoned arguments to convince others. Can draw from a range of strategies to influence others.
  • Adapts and works effectively with a variety of situations, individuals or groups. Is able to understand and appreciate different and opposing perspectives on an issue, to adapt an approach as the requirements of a situation
  • Exceptional organisational skills
  • Understanding of website design with knowledge of, or aptitude to learn and use tools such as iSite
  • Experience of leading change and/or implementing 50:50 and an understanding of data protection is desirable.

Desirable

  • A flair for visual and high impact communication
  • Editorial or production experience, with knowledge of sourcing contributors from underrepresented groups for a wide range of subjects/geographies. Strong understanding of the BBC’s editorial values and guidelines.
