JOB PURPOSE

Write for Rights is Amnesty's biggest annual campaign and activism event, with millions of actions taken in over 200 countries for individuals or groups experiencing human rights violations. The campaign needs a volunteer to act as a fact checker for all information about the ten individuals or groups featured in the campaign. This will ensure all public outputs are as accurate as possible.

This work will allow the selected candidate to acquire an array of skills and knowledge of the human rights situation in several countries around the world. The volunteer will work with a wide range of people in the global project team and in country teams and will be involved in varied research and campaign work to make a difference in the fight for human rights globally.

The volunteer position will only be needed from 15 June to 15 September 2023 for two/three days a week.

ABOUT YOU

You will be familiar with Amnesty International's campaigning work for Individuals at Risk, with an interest in human rights campaigning and the work that Amnesty International does. You will have excellent inter-personal and communication skills in English. Knowledge of a second language, either Spanish or French, is desirable.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Fact checking. The Global Project Team receives information about the individuals or groups at risk featuring in the campaign and uses it to produce campaign materials. Despite materials going through a review process, sometimes factual mistakes are not spotted until publication. The volunteer will go through all facts mentioned in the campaign strategies and materials and cross check they are accurate. Facts to be checked include addresses, names of people/institutions, dates, places, legal terminology etc. The volunteer will cross check information by working with Amnesty International researchers, legal professionals, and campaigners.
  • Other related tasks as required.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Accuracy and attention to detail
  • Good organizational skills and priority-setting
  • Fluent level of written and spoken English.
  • Ability to manage a varied workload and work independently
  • Understanding of the importance of securely handling confidential and sensitive information
